TV and movies would have us believe that men are the ones who get bored with the sex in long-term relationships. I think we’re all very familiar with the “distracted boyfriend” meme! But bad news, fellas – it turns out women actually grow disinterested in relationship sex faster than men, and generally report lower sexual satisfaction!
Author Wednesday Martin really shone a spotlight on this issue in an article for The Atlantic titled The Bored Sex. In it, she cited a British study, which found that women living with a partner were SUBSTANTIALLY less interested in sex than men in the same situation. That disinterest was expressed by roughly fifteen percent of the guys and THIRTY-EIGHT PERCENT of the ladies!
Now, some of this might come down to biology and how families have traditionally been organized. A pregnancy in the last year was strongly associated with a lack of sexual interest. As was having one or more young children, but only for women.
That doesn’t explain ALL of the disparity, though! An earlier German study found that this imbalance endured over time. Sixty percent of thirty-year-old women wanted sex “often” at the beginning of a relationship, but within four years, it was less than half - and after twenty years, it was down to twenty percent! Whereas the proportion of men wanting regular sex stayed between sixty and eighty percent, REGARDLESS of how long they’d been in a relationship!
So, it really does seem that women get bored quicker and have a need for more variety! There might also be something to the idea that when it comes to sex, men think more in terms of quantity, and women focus more on quality!
But if there’s one thing you should take away from this, men – you’d better do everything you can to keep her interested! I’m Eila Adams, and that’s some Pillow Talk!
